Forced migration
sir – The appalling scenes in Burma (September 28), Nigeria and South Sudan remind us that millions are being forced from their homes due to conflict, disaster and poverty.
On Wednesday Pope Francis launched a campaign to raise awareness of the plight of migrants. He has called upon governments to do more to help them. As Catholic and Anglican bishops, we see the generous welcome given to refugees in Britain, and we know that around the world many communities, often with much less, are doing the same.
Governments will meet in less than a year to agree two new UN compacts on refugees and migrants. We urge our Government to play a leading role in developing agreements that keep families together, help communities hosting those forced to flee, and tackle the reasons people migrate. A global crisis requires a global response.
