Briton fighting Isil killed days after fall of Raqqa

- By Ben Farmer and Josie Ensor in Beirut

ONE of the longest serving Britons fighting with Kurdish militia against Isil has been killed just days after he watched the fall of Raqqa.

Jac Holmes died clearing landmines on Monday, just hours after he wrote about walking through the liberated streets of the extremists’ former capital.

The mother of the 24-year-old sniper said that she was “extremely proud” of her son.

“He stood up for what he believed in and he had the courage to go out and do something where he thought that the West were not doing enough,” she said.

She said Jac believed defeating Islamic State of Iraq and Levant was “not just a Syrian problem, it was a world problem”.
