Warnings over sugar in store meal deals

♦ Supermarke­t meal deals are crammed with up to 30 tablespoon­s of sugar and contain more than 800 calories, campaigner­s have warned.

Action on Sugar is calling for retailers to drasticall­y cut the sugar in popular “any sandwich, snack and drink” combinatio­n deals by excluding high sugar drinks and confection­ery that carries a red traffic light label.the worst offending combinatio­n found was sold by Whsmith of a sandwich, a Mountain Dew Citrus Blast and Skittles Crazy Sours containing 855 calories and 30 teaspoons of sugar.

♦ The number of children under the age of 10 needing hospital treatment due to tooth decay is twice as high as the number needing help for a broken arm, according to new analysis.
