ATMS in decline after row over charges

-

♦ The number of free-to-use ATMS on high streets is expected to reduce following a row between banks and the UK’S biggest cash machine network, its chief executive has admitted.

Banks are expected to withdraw free cash machines under rules, unveiled tomorrow by Link, that will reduce the amount they can charge each other when customers withdraw money. John Howells, Link chief executive, told The Daily Telegraph he was concerned there were “too many cash points” at a time when fewer people were using coins and notes.

This is despite the Bank of England saying that in 2016 the value of notes in circulation increased by 10 per cent with some 2.7 million people relying heavily on cash for daily spending.
