2006

Paul Manafort starts working for Party of Regions, a pro-russian political party in Ukraine, according to charges later brought against him.

2010

Viktor Yanukovych (right), the party’s leader, is elected President of Ukraine. Mr Manafort is accused over a “multimilli­on dollar” lobbying campaign for him and the party from 2006 to 2014.

2011-2014

Mr Manafort “unlawfully, wilfully, and knowingly” failed to declare money held overseas, according to an indictment. $75 million is alleged to have flowed through offshore accounts.

March 28, 2016

He joins Donald Trump’s US presidenti­al campaign, tasked with ensuring that he secures enough delegate votes to secure nomination as the candidate by the Republican National Convention.

May 19

Mr Manafort becomes the Trump campaign’s chairman and chief strategist after weeks of in-fighting about the chain of command within Mr Trump’s top team.

June 9

The meeting where Donald Trump Jr was promised damaging informatio­n about Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton by a Kremlin-linked lawyer takes place at Trump Tower. Mr Manafort attends.

July 19

Mr Trump is named presidenti­al nominee at the Republican National Convention. Trump campaign figures push for new stance on Ukraine – not arming those fighting pro-russia forces.

August 12

Ledgers reveal Mr Manafort was paid $12.7 million by Ukraine’s Party of Regions, AP reports. Mr Manafort resigns from campaign. Jared Kushner says had he not resigned he would have been fired.

Nov 2016 and Feb 2017

Mr Trump is elected to the White House. Mr Manafort denies he did “outreach” in America for Party of Regions in official documents. These statements are now alleged to have been “false”.

May 17, 2017

Robert Mueller is named as a special prosecutor to look into Trump campaign links with Russia just days after Mr Trump fires James Comey as FBI director.

June 27

Mr Manafort formally registers as a “foreign agent” and his firm files forms showing that he received $17.1 million from Party of Regions.

July 28

The FBI descends on Mr Manafort’s home in Virginia in a dawn raid as part of Mr Mueller’s investigat­ion, according to reports.

October 30

Mr Manafort (left) hands himself into the FBI and is indicted on 12 counts including “conspiracy to launder money” and being an “unregister­ed agent of a foreign principal”.
