Time to iron out the BBC’S subsidised snark

-

sir – Charles Moore (Comment, October 27), discussing the BBC’S “culture of denunciation”, does not ask why British adults are forced to fund its programmes.

In a recent edition of one of its daytime antiques programmes, a visit was made to an ironing museum, and when a photograph of a Victorian laundry was shown – with women ironing in rows – the unnecessary comment was made that “this is how the upper classes got their ironing done”.

In fact, this is how the hotels and guest houses got their ironing done: the upper classes would have had their own laundry and staff inhouse.

A few days later, in another apparently innocuous programme, a similar class-related comment was made. Look out for these snide remarks: they appear in many BBC programmes, and I for one resent having to subsidise them.
