Wedding bells are music to Netflix’s ears

‘Spoiler alert – if you’re watching The Crown on TV, look away now’

ROYAL engagements can be good for business – just ask the makers of Meghan Markle’s white coat, or manufacturers of commemorative tea towels. Now Netflix can be added to the list.

The US streaming service is the home of Suits, the legal drama starring Ms Markle. Ratings have declined since the series launched in 2011, but are now expected to surge as royal watchers tune in.

The current series will be Ms Markle’s last. It was her body double, Nicky Bursic, who raised suspicions of an impending wedding announcement earlier this month, when she posted a picture of the two women together alongside the farewell message: “Wishing you all the happiness in the world.”

Netflix is also home to The Crown, for those keen to get a royal fix in the run-up to the nuptials. Peter Morgan, who writes the series, has said that his time spent researching the Royal family has turned him into an ardent monarchist.

“I came at it as a complete anti-monarchist and I’ve turned around. I’m royalist now,” he tells this week’s Radio Times.

The next episodes will cover the Sixties, with later series taking viewers up to the present day. And, as more than one observer noted on social media yesterday: who better to play Meghan Markle in the final series than Ms Markle herself?
