Brexit excitement

-

SIR – In my lifetime I have seen the supposedly incredible happen: Nelson Mandela walking free from prison; people power dismantling the Berlin Wall; the Iron Curtain collapsing.

Each of these events was informed by a belief that we could build a better future; each was an exciting hope. Yet nothing quite compares with the excitement I feel about a Britain free of the constraints of an unsustainable, unaccountable, undemocratic political system called the European Union.

Of course we will remain engaged with Europe; we could no more leave it than we could the world. But, as the Government explains its Brexit destination following yesterday’s Cabinet discussion, I hope ministers will focus on one simple affirmation: our Government’s united belief in Britain, in its amazing, enterprising and courageous people and in the tremendous benefits that embracing a new future offers all of us, if only we would believe in ourselves. SIR – May I offer my support to the Editor for the decision to print the names of the MPS who voted against the Government on Brexit last week?

MPS are accountable for the way they vote and must take responsibility if their actions have infuriated some of the electorate. They cannot claim anonymity when it suits them. Ruth Wright
