The best word for a proper Welsh downpour

sir – I was interested to read about the different words used across Britain to describe heavy rain (report, February 1).

My Welsh-born mother-in-law always used to say it was “tamping down”. As I reflect on many happy holidays there, it strikes me as a very apt descriptio­n of Welsh rain. Maureen Parker
