Delpozo comes up trumps with a dazzling debut of light and colour

- By Charlie Gowans-eglinton

Delpozo, the luxury Spanish label, yesterday made its London Fashion Week debut. And while the name may not be familiar to you, no doubt you’ve seen its designs: Delpozo’s dresses are some of the most photographed around.

A regular on the New York Fashion Week schedule for the past five years, Delpozo has become a go-to for Melania Trump.

She wore a cocoon-sleeved coat dress (priced at £2,100) in fuchsia for a public appearance in September, and another iteration in deep purple in Seoul in November, before choosing a custom-made embellished black gown by Delpozo for the White House official Christmas portrait. Queen Letizia, of designer Josep Font’s native Spain, has also worn the label.

And they’re not the only fans. Law Roach, the stylist who dresses Celine Dion, Naomi Campbell and Zendaya, was on the front row at yesterday’s show; no doubt he’s hoping that the Oscars’ red carpet dress code will allow for bright colours and not follow the all-black precedent set by the Golden Globes and last night’s Baftas. So, too, is Font. “In winter, I like a lot of colour,” he tells me after the show, “it lights your face.”

And Font isn’t exaggerating: there was a lot of colour: azure blue, canary yellow, Kelly green and a whole symphony of pinks: watermelon, raspberry and neon.

Delpozo’s designs are both incredibly feminine, often featuring bows and abstract flowers, and sculptural in silhouette, making for flattering dresses that photograph particularly well – a must for red carpet outings.

Trailing strapless gowns in pink and blue would be elegant choices, while a bolder dresser, like Dion, might choose the rainbow paillette sequins, laid in circles like the scales of a fish – or, in this case, a mermaid – or the

burgundy and navy lace and sequin gowns trimmed with feathers, like the plumage of an exotic bird.

For most of us, Delpozo’s price tags put these pieces firmly in the fantasy category.

But for those with bottomless pockets, like Melania Trump, the brand is the ultimate in ladylike glamour – though Font gives the women who wear his dresses all the credit. “For me, glamour is an attitude,” says Font, “not age, not physique. It’s an aura.” But no doubt a beautiful dress helps.
