Mother found dead in her own home may be victim of a botched burglary, say police

- By Francesca Marshall

THE wife of a company director was killed in her own home by intruders in a possible burglary gone wrong, police believe.

Sarbjit Kaur, 38, was found by family members inside her home on Rockery Lane, Wolverhampton, on Friday afternoon. Police say Mrs Kaur had been assaulted, but a post mortem examination has so far not been able to identify the precise cause of death.

Early indications suggest some items were taken from the home but Det Chief Insp Chris Mallett, who is leading the murder investigation, said he is “keeping an open mind” on the motive for the killing.

He said: “Mrs Kaur was attacked inside her own home.

“This is a shocking case, the likes of which are extremely rare, and we have a team of officers working on this murder inquiry to establish what happened and to finding the person or people responsible.

“The motive so far is unclear and I am keeping an open mind regarding the circumstances.

“We are investigating several lines of inquiry including whether this was a random burglary or if the address or Mrs Kaur were deliberately targeted. We are working with the family to understand exactly what items were taken.”

It is believed that Mrs Kaur is married to Gurpreet Singh, 42, a company director who runs Dhanda Properties UK. The couple are understood to have two children.

Hearing of the news, residents said there had been a number of burglaries in the area over the years. A next-door neighbour said: “I never saw the woman, and didn’t know their names, but we’ve had a couple burglaries in the past.

“The burglars wait for you to go to work and then they break in from the side gate or the back.

“I don’t know if this area is being targeted but it is a bit worrying.”

Another resident added: “I have been here for 50 years and I’ve had a couple of burglaries myself, but not recently though.

“They must see the houses and think, ‘these are wealthy’ and just wait until everyone’s out and then jump at the chance to break in.”

Police announced that they would be mounting extra patrols in the area and warned residents to be “extra vigilant”.
