Social media puts ‘profit over safety’
Social media firms have not flagged a single suspected extremist to authorities, Britain’s top terrorism officer has disclosed.
Mark Rowley said internet giants had yet to report anyone to counterterror police, despite them taking down thousands of posts and videos.
Speaking at a conference in London, Mr Rowley likened terrorists to the “private tenants” of internet giants, adding: “The online extremists seem able to act with impunity, occupying spaces owned and managed by legitimate and wealthy corporations.”
He urged online content platforms like Facebook and Twitter to do more to report suspicious behaviour to trained experts.
