Bercow under fire
sir – For what it is worth, I find Angus Sinclair’s account of events when he was private secretary to the Speaker more credible than that suggested by John Bercow (“Bercow faces new allegations of bullying an aide”, report, May 3). Robert Hood-wright Nanstallon, Cornwall
sir – I await the petition headed “Sign here to ensure the Speaker, Mr John Bercow, steps down in 50 days”. Kate Peeters London SW1
sir – Having observed John Bercow’s career, from his early promotion by the Freedom Association, to the Speaker’s chair, I could discern no political weight, principles or originality, but rather an ambition buoyed by inconsequential verbosity. Above all, I could see in his personal inadequacy and drive for power the makings of a real bully. Rodney Atkinson Stocksfield, Northumberland
sir – Reports concerning alleged bullying by John Bercow are very concerning, but not totally surprising.
Watching television coverage of proceedings in the House of Commons, I am always struck by the Speaker’s slightly smug attitude and his obvious delight in putting down MPS who cross him. He wishes to appear strong, but if he needs to bully his staff then it suggests the opposite.
George Thomas was a truly great Speaker, as was Betty Boothroyd, but I doubt they felt the need to bully staff. David Kidd Petersfield, Hampshire
