ANDREW MARR will have an operation this week to remove a malignant tumour on his kidney.

The broadcaster, who leads the BBC’S flagship Sunday morning show, will be admitted to hospital for surgery this week for what is expected to be a straightforward procedure.

Mr Marr, 58, will temporarily step down from hosting The Andrew Marr Show every Sunday while he recovers from the operation.

“I am going to be away for a couple of weeks or so,” the former BBC political editor told viewers yesterday. “I’m having a small hospital operation and I will be back as soon as I possibly can, so be kind please to whoever is sitting in this chair next week.”

Mary Greenham, his agent, said the journalist was “expected to make a full recovery and will be returning to the airwaves soon”.

“He and his family have asked for privacy at this difficult time,” she said.

A BBC spokesman said: “Andrew is taking a period of time off for medical reasons.

“We wish him well and look forward to welcoming him back on our screens soon.”

In January 2013, Mr Marr spent two months in hospital after suffering a stroke while at his home.

He underwent extensive physiotherapy to help him walk again. Eight months after the stroke, her returned to hosting the morning show.

He chronicled his recovery in Andrew Marr: My Brain and Me, a 2017 documentary.
