Sochi surprise

Bashar al-assad, the Syrian president, made a surprise visit to Russia to meet Vladimir Putin at his residence in Sochi.

The Kremlin quoted Mr Assad as saying that Syria is making progress in fighting “terrorism,” which “opens the door to the political process”. Mr Putin told Mr Assad “a lot has been done” at Russia-sponsored talks between Syria and Kazakhstan, adding: “Now we can take the next steps together.”
