Estonian town votes for marijuana leaf on its flag
An Estonian town whose name means “cannabis” has voted to adopt a marijuana leaf as its emblem.
Kanepi’s unusual name is rooted in a traditional cottage industry that sprang up around the processing of hemp into oil and fabric centuries ago.
The image, a cannabis leaf with the caption “Mari Jane”, won the municipality’s online poll to choose a logo, flag and coat of arms.
Despite marijuana being illegal in the country, the logo was still approved by Estonia’s heraldry commission.
