Historian Simon Schama tells the story of Israel, through historical accounts and contemporary interviews combined with personal consideration of how Israel’s story intersects with Schama’s own life (Schama was born three years before Israel was). Schama says that Israel fills him with “pride, anxiety, joy and profound exasperation”. As with any discussion of Israel, this programme is likely to be controversial, but it’s a thorough, thoughtful essay shaped by real passion.
