Grenfell Tower failings
SIR – The “stay put” fire policy in high-rise buildings is flawed (“Fire Brigade failed us, say Grenfell survivors”, report, May 25). The advice should be to get out and stay out as quickly as possible.
Compartmentation of a building is neither a guaranteed nor effective fire safety measure. In Liverpool Arena, for example, a fire was able to burn through concrete.
The reason fire brigades advise against using lifts is because they use them to ascend to just below the seat of the fire. Neither do they want people trooping down the stairs in case they want to carry up hoses. This is misguided. The aim of fire safety is first, foremost and only to save lives. Extinguishing the fire is secondary. Ken Wilson
