Sights set on Oxford
SIR – The Labour MP David Lammy is on the diversity warpath, with Oxford University his primary concern (report, May 24).
Is he not targeting the wrong stage of education? Surely the combined efforts of schools and – to the extent that this is possible – families is where attention should be directed. If schools are doing their job effectively (another subject altogether), with support from families, then pupils with potential will be nurtured accordingly and given the opportunity to compete for places at top universities.
Universities should be left to focus their scarce resources on the acceptance and tuition of students who have demonstrated the potential to stay the course. John Kellie
