SIR – As a Guide leader I often held jumble sales to raise money for camping equipment.

One day two elegantly dressed people came looking for books. I asked what they wanted. “Red books,” they replied.

They had recently bought a large house in the area and were redecorating the library in white and red. They wanted to fill the shelves with red books (Letters, May 28) – subject irrelevant.

SIR – I have just seen an advertisement for the latest thing in televisions – “ambient” mode, which enables the TV to adopt a kind of camouflage, blending in with the decor.

I already have more than enough trouble locating the remote control, without having to worry about finding the set as well.
