Spanish court backs jail for king’s brother-in-law

The Spanish king’s brother-in-law was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison yesterday after the country’s supreme court upheld fraud conviction­s against him involving millions of euros.

Iñaki Urdangarin, 50, a former Olympic handball player, is married to Princess Cristina, King Felipe VI’S sister, but was sidelined from the royal family after the embezzleme­nt scandal erupted in 2010. He may still appeal.

The scandal contribute­d to the decision of the king’s father Juan Carlos I to abdicate in 2014.
