Spanish court backs jail for king’s brother-in-law
The Spanish king’s brother-in-law was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison yesterday after the country’s supreme court upheld fraud convictions against him involving millions of euros.
Iñaki Urdangarin, 50, a former Olympic handball player, is married to Princess Cristina, King Felipe VI’S sister, but was sidelined from the royal family after the embezzlement scandal erupted in 2010. He may still appeal.
The scandal contributed to the decision of the king’s father Juan Carlos I to abdicate in 2014.
