Even Royals can give hugs

Few tennis fans will forget the moment the Duchess of Kent consoled a tearful Jana Novotna after she lost the 1993 ladies singles final.

Now the Duchess has given a rare interview in which she said it showed that members of the Royal family can be quite “normal”. Speaking about giving Novotna, who died of cancer last year, a hug she said: “We are quite normal people. We do hug people who cry. It is a natural reaction! Jana and I became quite firm friends.”

Code violation Mr Becker

Boris Becker was in hot water with Sue Barker after swearing about his diplomatic status on the BBC.

Becker, recently asserted his right to diplomatic immunity after he was appointed as an attaché for the Central African Republic. When Martina Navratilova suggested he could use his status to skip airport queues, he replied: “My friend told me, ‘You b------, you don’t have to wait in line now’.” That prompted an apology from Barker and a reprimand for Becker.

Fans see red over Roger snub

Fans reacted with fury after the BBC bumped Roger Federer from its live coverage in favour of the clash between British wildcard Harriet Dart and Karolína Plíšková. Worse still, the red button feed for Federer’s match was not working at one stage.

One fan, Joanne Wilson said: “Are you kidding me? To get Federer on Centre Court I have to do the red button, then the blue button, but you have court 12 on BBC2. Your coverage is already a JOKE.”
