ONE of the men who murdered Stephen Lawrence, the black teenager, has been paid £10,000 in compensation after he was attacked in jail.

David Norris, 41, who is serving life for the racist killing, sued the Ministry of Justice after claiming not enough had been done to protect him from other inmates.

Norris was attacked in his cell at Belmarsh Prison, in south-east London, in 2011, while he was awaiting trial for murdering Stephen in south-east London in 1993. He alleged he had been beaten up by three black inmates including Leon Fyle, a convicted killer.

Norris took legal action after claiming he had been deliberately placed in danger after being moved to a wing with a large number of black inmates. He sustained a broken nose and ribs and his teeth were also damaged, but no prisoner was ever charged over the attack.

It is understood he was awarded around £10,000 in compensation, but the total cost of the legal challenge is thought to be three times that amount.

Norris was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum tariff of 14 years and three months after being found guilty of murder alongside Gary Dobson. They were among a gang of at least five violent racist thugs who attacked Stephen as he waited for a bus with a friend.
