Dim meter roll-out

-

SIR – I can confirm that not-so-smart meters continue to be fitted (report, July 4).

I steadfastly delayed the fitting of a smart meter, awaiting the introduction of the upgraded version (SMETS2: “smart metering equipment technical specifications: second version”). But I have just had to renew my time-expired energy contract with my provider. A condition is my agreement to a smart meter within six months, otherwise my contract reverts to the standard variable tariff.

As I was expecting an upgrade to version two of the smart meter to be available later this year, I contacted the call centre of Siemens, which is co-ordinating the roll-out. I asked for the latest installation date, and was told it would be September, and also that there were no version two available, as the roll-out of upgrades was delayed indefinitely.

So what is Smart Energy GB doing? Why are the promised upgraded meters not yet available?

As a national initiative, this is not going to end well. Mike Corbridge
