How to pack for any kind of summer holiday
MOSCOW, RUSSIA
The vibe: Previously the reserve of architecture buffs and those with an extensive snowboot collection, Moscow has, understandably, shot to the top of most Brits holiday lists in recent weeks. Once you’ve mustered the energy for the 13-page visa form (unless you are one of the lucky ones who bagged an elusive ticket to tonight’s match, and therefore have a fan identity card which exempts you), stunning views, cultural hotspots and a nail-biting semi-final await.
Currently, the form is very much topless British men chanting Three Lions across Red Square, with a smattering of the England team Wags who are bringing glamour to the sidelines.
Carry on: Forget what you heard about Zara slides and Mango basket bags being key holiday accessories. If you’re already married to a footballer
(or are hoping to be), ostentatious branding is key. Think household names; the everywags, as we’re dubbing them, aren’t trying to showcase their insider knowledge with a Hunting Season or Tara Zadeh tote. Instead, studded Valentino footwear, a Saint Laurent handbag and Gucci sunglasses are their go-to.
Afternoon delight: Match day at Luzhniki Stadium calls for daytime glamour. Think loose denim elevated with a statement sandal and mirrored sunglasses – keep it casual, as it’s all in the details (so a mani, pedi and spraytan, too).
After dark: Knock on wood, there’ll be some celebrating tonight, in which case: Little Black Dresses. Expect Rebekah Vardy, left, et al to team their LBD’S with Alaïa or Gianvito Rossi stilettos, with locks blow-dried to a standard former Wag and L’oréal Elnett ambassador Cheryl would be proud of.
Don’t forget: The #merch. While the Wags look to personalised diamanté iphone cases (see Vardy, inset above) to take selfies from the private boxes, if you’re watching tonight’s game closer to home – your sofa, or your local drinking establishment – a subtle, stylish nod to The Boys will be appreciated. Bypass England home kits; a white sundress and red slides are on the chic side of enthusiasm.
POLZEATH, CORNWALL
The vibe: Art dealers, media types, David and Samantha Cameron. Who wants to fight with easyjet’s self-check-in machine when you can just pack the dogs/ kids/husband/tortoise/crate of wine into the car? There’s nothing more satisfying than spending a day beachcombing, and then shucking your own oysters for dinner (OK, posh fish and chips from Rick Stein’s for the kids).
Carry on: Sandals you can actually walk in (try Penelope Chilvers), a properly warm cardigan (Uniqlo) and a Daunt Books cloth tote to shove all of your (and everyone else’s) bits and pieces in.
Beached: Italian brand 120% Lino specialises in effortless linen layers in a huge range of colours that will work in heat or high winds – since you’ll likely get both. Chinos are more comfortable than jeans for walks or exploring the town – Gap’s are the best – and you’ll want a pair of Veja trainers for longer walks and rainy days. The latter also calls for a lightweight windcheater/waterproof – Scandinavian brand Stutterheim’s come in pink, burgundy and teal as well as the usual shades.
After dark: Dressing up isn’t really the done thing here – but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t change for dinner. Look for cotton pieces with smarter silhouettes – anklelength dresses, button-up blouses at Arket, Cos and Toast – they can easily be dressed up with a belt, pair of earrings, or a few bangles. Heels will feel OTT, but Aeyde’s smart snake-print flats strike the right balance.
Don’t forget: A rashvest. A few weeks of Mediterranean temperatures do not a Mediterranean ocean make.
Do pick up: A Patrick Heron print from the latest exhibition at Tate St Ives – worth the long drive down the coast.
