With the Wimbledon quarter-final pitching Roger Federer against the relatively unfancied Kevin Anderson the Centre Court crowd was enthralled. But one man could no longer stand the tension after four hours’ play. At 8-8 in the final set he shouted: “I need to watch the football…” The match lasted another 20 minutes, finally finishing at 5.30pm and 13 games to 11, when Anderson beat the reigning champion. Finally football fans were able to leave without feeling guilty.
