Phone lost at sea is found by diver after text lights it up

- By Daily Telegraph Reporter

A DIVER was able to reunite a kayaker with his mobile phone that he lost overboard when its screen lit up on the sea bed after two days underwater.

Cerys Hearsey’s attention was drawn to the iphone 7 when she noticed a flash of light about 30ft down.

The phone, which had received a text, was in a waterproof case. Remarkably, not only did it still work but it still had 84 per cent battery life.

She took it back to the shore and scrolled through the contacts to find its owner, and was able to return it to a grateful Rob Smith, whose cousin had lost it while kayaking at Durdle Door in Dorset.

They were approaching the famous coastal landmark when the phone toppled over the edge of their boat. Although it was in a waterproof case, they accepted they wouldn’t be able to recover it and returned home.

Ms Hearsey, 34, who was diving in the area, said: “They were really lovely people and amazed to see it, I think they had given up any hopes of finding it. I just hope someone would do the same for me one day.”

Mr Smith, from Bridport, Dorset, said: “Cerys was such a nice lady and we were over the moon. We couldn’t believe she had it and at 84 per cent battery. I would like to give a big thank you to the whole scuba diving team.

“My cousin had a lot of pictures of his trip to the UK saved on the phone which he thought he wouldn’t be able to see again. We thought there was no way of getting it back.”
