Carrington’s advice

SIR – A friend of mine was talking to Lord Carrington (Obituaries, July 11) at a drinks party shortly after his resignation.

She sympathised with him over what could not have been an easy decision. He thanked her and said: “Whenever I have been faced with a really difficult problem, I have asked myself, ‘Now, what would nanny have wanted me to do?’ ”
