Schauffele copies Spieth with a double bogey at the seventh after zig-zagging down the fairway. Woods, at the turn, is all alone in front for the first time.

Justin Rose rattles the flagstick at 14 and gets an eagle to move to -5. Birdies for two Kevins, Kisner and Chappell, at the 10th propel them to -6 .

Woods’s club is caught in the grass at the 11th, his ball hits a spectator and he double-bogeys to fall to -5, one shot behind a four-way tie for the lead.

Schauffele slides his birdie putt at 16 to the right and Molinari hits a wedge to 18 that allows him to sink a five-footer for birdie and the clubhouse lead.
