Yard investigates ‘vile’ threats sent to MP

- By Jack Maidment POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT

A POLICE investigation has been launched after violent sexual threats were sent to a Tory Brexiteer MP.

Andrea Jenkyns yesterday posted a picture on her Twitter account of an email she had received in which a troll had subjected her to a series of misogynistic and vulgar insults apparently because of her pro-brexit position.

The insults, all of which are too offensive to print, were described by the MP for Morley and Outwood as “vile” and “appalling”. But the outspoken advocate for Brexit insisted she would not be cowed, as she vowed to continue to speak up in favour of the UK leaving the EU. She said: “We will not let these people beat us down. Going to keep fighting for Brexit.”

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it was investigating the email which Ms Jenkyns said had referenced Brexit in its title. Ms Jenkyns said: “Thank you to all who have phoned, messaged, emailed and sent kind messages on social media regarding the abhorrent email I received.

“I really do appreciate your kindness. I have provided a statement to the police.”

The Conservative backbencher has become an increasingly prominent supporter of Brexit, quitting her junior role in the Government in May because she said she wanted to “fight for Brexit” and devote more of her time to being a “robust voice for the benefits”.

Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions last week, Ms Jenkyns asked Mrs May: “Can the Prime Minister inform the House at what point it was decided that Brexit means Remain?”

Mrs May replied coolly: “Can I say to you: at absolutely no point, because Brexit continues to mean Brexit.”
