Three Men in a Boat
RADIO 4 EXTRA, 10.00AM
Does there exist a more perfect British summer book than Jerome K Jerome’s Three Men in a
Boat? Funny and idyllic, any excuse to revisit the story is a delight, not least in this 2013 dramatisation starring a trio of sharp comic actors, Hugh Dennis, Steve Punt and Julian Rhind-tutt, broadcast in two parts (concluding the same time tomorrow). The scene is Edwardian London, where three carefree young chaps decide to take their dog, Montmorency, on a boating expedition along the Thames – but, of course, things don’t quite go to plan.

Wagner, Schubert, Zimmerman and Sibelius are all on the programme, which includes the Overture from The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Schubert orch Liszt’s Fantasy in C, Wanderer, and Sibelius’s Symphony No 7 in C major. The BBC Philharmonic is joined by the French-canadian pianist Louis Lortie and soprano Elizabeth Watts, who may well be superhuman – she gave birth to twin girls last September and has maintained a glittering performance schedule since.
