The eco conundrum

-

SIR – Mary Bower (Letters, August 28) wonders whether her washing machine’s “eco” mode is economical or eco-friendly.

My LG washer-dryer has “eco” and “normal eco” buttons. The manual explains that the “eco” button engages the eco mode and the “normal eco” button engages the normal eco mode.

None the wiser, I called LG’S customer service and was told that the “eco” mode reduces water consumption, resulting in a longer run time and higher electricity consumption, whereas the “normal eco” mode reduces electricity consumption at the cost of more water.

Why couldn’t the manual say this? For that matter, why can’t the buttons say “water saver” and “power saver”? Iwan Price-evans Croydon, Surrey
