Tougher water restrictions in the pipeline

Power showers could be restricted and households forced to install water meters under plans to tackle future water shortages, experts have warned.

The National Infrastructure Commission has calculated that by 2040 Britain would need an extra four billion litres a day to cope with a drier climate and population growth.

Every home would be expected to save an extra 23 litres of water daily.
