Where do we stand on...

wedding dresses with pockets?

- Rosa Silverman

Pockets are awfully sexist. That much has lately been made crystal clear, with a crucial study last month revealing that those on women’s clothes are significantly smaller than those on men’s. Who knew? Actually, anyone who’s ever been a woman and worn clothes.

And, of course, we’re all suitably outraged. (What do we want? Bigger pockets. Where do we want them? On our jeans, please.)

But when it comes to wedding dresses, it’s different. While traditionally, a woman would be expected to get through her wedding day without recourse to pockets, as few bridal gowns seemed to factor in somewhere to stuff your belongings as you walked down the aisle, we’re now being told that growing numbers of brides are embracing the pocketed wedding dress. Indeed, a veritable surge in their popularity has been reported: there are whole threads on Twitter dedicated to celebrating the damn things, accompanied by hashtags like #womenneed pocketstoo, a sentiment we would usually agree with, but not on this of all days. Not – and this is the crux of the matter – if the point is to enable the bride to carry her phone with her throughout.

Commenting on the trend, Hamish Shephard of Bridebook, an online wedding planner, said: “From the very top bridal designers to high street bridal lines, we are seeing pockets in wedding dresses being embraced as both a stylish and practical addition. Perfect for having your phone to whip out for selfies on the dance floor.”

Because imagine being unable to update your Instagram feed at your own wedding? It’d barely be worth the trouble of getting married.
