Fire escape

SIR – The suggestion that parents should leave their mobile phones downstairs at night (report, September 15) is contrary to advice given to me by a fire officer when visiting my home.

He told me always to take my mobile phone up to the bedroom at night, in case a fire prevented me from getting downstairs to phone for help. Jocelyne Gardner
