Convicted murderer Erik Menendez gives his side of the story in this new series revisiting one of the most notorious murders of the Eighties. In the first episode (of five), Menendez speaks of the events that led to him, then aged 18, and his 21-year-old brother Lyle to gun down their parents at their home in Beverly Hills in August 1989. Donald Sutherland’s portrayal of oil magnate and miser J Paul Getty Snr is mesmerising in Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy’s slow-burning production. As news of his grandson Paul’s (Harris Dickinson) kidnap filters through, Getty Snr dispatches his Stetsonwearing head of security Spencer Chase (Brendan Fraser) to investigate. Back for a 19th series, Kevin Mccloud’s adventures-in-architecture show turns away from hyper-modernism in this opening episode. Instead, it’s about renewal and a Spanish architect’s mission to convert a derelict folly in Buckinghamshire into a comfortable family home. As you can guess, things doesn’t go altogether smoothly. GO
