Telephone courtesy

SIR – Before I installed Caller Display I would often answer the telephone with my number (Letters, September 20), only to hear: “Who’s that?”

After several such calls, often at unsocial hours, I began to reply: “Who did you want?” Invariably, the receiver was then replaced at the other end.

Discourteous, but totally effective.
