Bodybuilder died after taking overdose of weight-loss pills
A bodybuilder who was “never satisfied” with his physique died after taking an overdose of slimming pills, a coroner heard.
Finlay Connor Mcgowan, 26, who went to the gym between five and six times a week, consumed a fatal dose of the unlicensed weightloss supplement 2,4-Dinitrophenol, commonly referred to as DNP. The drug causes weight loss by burning fat and carbohydrates.
Earlier this year Bernard Rebelo became the first person to be convicted of manslaughter in relation to the sale of DNP after he sold them to Eloise Aimee Parry, who later died.
Preston Coroner’s Court heard that officers investigating Mr Mcgowan’s death had found steroids and syringes in his home.
Dismissing a verdict of suicide and noting he had tried to contact NHS mental health services before he died, Coroner James Newman said: “I will conclude that on this occasion this is a further cry for help which has gone tragically wrong.”
