Pension pitfalls

- Peter Townsend

SIR – For more than 20 years, every week, I have had a short walk to my local post office to collect my state pension in cash – a simple and reliable arrangement.

Early in September, I received an unsigned letter from the Office Manager, Department of Work and Pensions, stating that the method of payment will be changed and that I need to establish an account with a bank or similar organisation.

In my reply, I asked if they had not realised that the elderly are more vulnerable to fraud and scams, and that there are daily reports of banks such as TSB failing their customers.

Why change a good system and introduce possible pitfalls? Needless to say, my letter to the Office Manager has not been answered.
