TV soap’s tip saved life of stabbing victim

-

A GRANDMOTHER used a procedure she had seen on Coronation Street to save the life of a man who had been stabbed in the chest.

Gillian Edmondson, 57, had in mind a storyline in which the character Ryan Connor, the son of Michelle Connor played by Kym Marsh, was hit by a car and pressure had to be applied to his injuries, when she spotted the man.

She took off her jumper and used it to stem the bleeding for around 25 minutes until an ambulance arrived at the scene.

He was taken to hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable. It is believed Mrs Edmondson’s swift action saved the man’s life.

The drama involving the stabbed man unfolded in Carnforth near Lancaster, Lancs, on Friday afternoon.

Mrs Edmondson, who works as a PA and lives in the town, says she knew the man as Martin Parkinson, and that he was in his 50s.

She said: “I saw Martin staggering by the Spar, by the tanning shop. That’s when I realised he’d been stabbed. He was talking, saying he couldn’t breathe.

“I just put as much pressure on the wound. My arm was sore with having to apply pressure as long as long as I did. He was in and out of consciousness.” Mrs Edmondson, who is a mother-of-five and grandmother-ofseven added: “I was a bit shocked, it was just adrenalin.”

“Do you know where I got it? I got if off Coronation Street. Kim Marsh, her son had been hit by a car and they told her to apply pressure because it would stop the bleeding.”

Lancaster Police said it was searching for a woman, Kevina Nicholson, 36, in connection with the attack.
