King-size avocados go on sale at supermarket giant Asda

-

 Giant avocados are going on sale at the supermarket Asda this weekend.

The creamy green fruits weigh between 480g and 670g, more than two to three times larger than the average “large” avocado.

The giant versions have a ratio of seed to flesh of 30 to 70 per cent, compared with the typical 50 per cent split in regular avocados, giving shoppers more for their money.

The larger amount of flesh on the Argentiniangrown avocados also means the fruit lasts longer, as high calcium levels reduce the its “oxidisation speed”, or the time that it takes to go brown.

Nasir Ahmed, an avocado technologist at Asda, said: “Last year, Asda customers ate their way through 28million avocados, with the fruit now a cupboard, fridge and restaurant staple.

“With the nation’s appetite for them continuing to grow, we’re excited to be introducing the biggest avocados on the market.”
