The £50 Christmas advert we all should watch
What do I want for Christmas? Well, since you’re asking, I’d really love one of those swish coffee machines that allows you to intravenously pump caffeine into your body from the moment you wake up. Or perhaps, a world where nobody ever mentions the word “Brexit” again. What’s that you’re saying? I may as well start believing in Father Christmas? Charming!
Speaking of Brexit, I’ve noticed that while Jacob Rees-mogg and his merry men have been busy trying to make a hash of the Tory party and, by extension, this country, everyone else has been focusing on saving the planet. I mean, what else is there to do? Sit back and relax as the people you have elected make responsible decisions on your behalf? Ha ha!
But seriously. In the last year there has been a real shift in attitudes towards conservation and mass consumerism. All those Black Friday deals and glossy Christmas adverts are beginning to look a little out of place in a world that is drowning under a tide of plastic. Which is why it was so nice to see the tear-jerking festive “ad” made for fifty quid by filmmaker Phil Beastall, from Gloucestershire. I won’t ruin it for you – please, rush to the internet and google it now! – but what I will say is that by the end of it, love is the thing you want to buy into, rather than, say, John Lewis.
What does this country want for Christmas? More people like that lovely Beastall bloke, I’d say.
