When the trolley-bus poles came off the wires

SIR – I well remember, as a child in east London in the postwar years, sitting patiently while the trolleybus driver (Letters, 29 November) left his cab and used a huge pole to reconnect the conductor poles to the cables. We all thought it great fun, but imagine the traffic queues nowadays if this were to happen. Marie Blanchard

Nottingham is now running its entire park-and-ride services using battery-powered vehicles, and these can operate all day on an overnight charge. John Bowden
