Boris Johnson

Age: 54

Odds: 5/1

Brexit pitch: Having led the Leave campaign in 2016, the former foreign secretary has been the most vociferous critic of Theresa May’s deal since resigning from Cabinet in July.

He is arguably the best-known Tory MP in Britain, and has consistently come out on top in polling of Conservative voters. Mr Johnson has also made no secret of his desire to lead, and yesterday refused to rule out a challenge when asked on the BBC’S Andrew Marr Show.

However, his stint as Foreign Secretary turned a number of MPS against him, with some even threatening to resign the whip if he were to become leader.

If he is to avoid a repeat of his failed 2016 bid, he will need to embark on a serious charm offensive to win over doubters on the Tory backbenches.

If he became PM, he is expected to tear up the Withdrawal Agreement and take up the EU’S offer of a Canada-style free trade deal, whilst at the same time pushing ahead with deals with the US, China and other major economies.
