Kidney dialysis could lead to brain injury

Kidney dialysis may be linked to progressive brain injury in those who receive the treatment for many years, according to a study by the University of Glasgow.

Scientists said the process could cause short-term “cerebral stunning” and noted an association between both short- and long-term haemodialysis use and brain injury.

The study, which looked at almost 100 patients, measured cerebral blood flow and tested each patient’s cognitive function during and beyond dialysis.

The paper is published in the journal American Society of Nephrolog y.
