NHS admits ‘failings in care’ after suicide of Army veteran

 An Iraq war veteran suffering from posttrauma­tic stress disorder took his own life after he was refused a hospital place, it has emerged, as NHS chiefs admitted a catalogue of failings in his care.

Aidan Knight joined the Army as a 17-year-old, and served for five years before he left, telling his mother he had seen “too much death”.

The father-of-three hanged himself after trying to get help from mental health services for months, lawyers representi­ng his family said.his family were awarded a six-figure payout after lawyers brought a civil action against the Sussex Partnershi­p NHS Foundation Trust in the High Court.

Mr Knight, who served in Iraq with the elite 2 Para, died a “tortured soul” in April 2015. Between 2014 and 2015, he had taken an overdose in the first of four suicide bids.

The trust, which apologised to Mr Knight’s family for the “failings in the care he received”, was contacted for comment.
