Prada on defensive over ‘golliwog’ dolls on display in its windows

- By Katie Morley Consumer Affairs editor

PRADA has defended itself against racism allegations after using “black-faced monkeys” in its shops. Members of the public pointed out the resemblance between the black figures with large red lips and golliwog dolls, which are widely considered racially offensive.

The figures appear in Prada’s shop fronts and throughout its accessories collection, including handbag charms, wallets and jewellery. Prada insisted the figures were “imaginary” and bore no relation to the real world, but said it would withdraw them from display and sale.

A spokesman said: “The Pradamalia are fantasy charms composed of elements of the Prada oeuvre.”
