A little bit of Telegraph makes decanters shine

-

sir – Gordon Everett (Letters, December 14) asks for ideas on cleaning a port decanter.

When I was a Chelsea licensee plagued with limescale from London water, we tore newspaper into postage-stamp-sized pieces, put them into our decanters with half a pint of water, and shook it, as though a cocktail was being made.

Customers often asked how our glass did not suffer limescale. It was the newsprint.

sir – Easy: take a shotgun cartridge, cut off the top end, put the shot into the decanter with a little washing up liquid, shake well. When you empty the shot, use a strainer and keep the shot for next time. This always works for us.

sir – It sounds as if a deposit of chalk has been left in Mr Everett’s decanter, which has picked up the colour of his lovely port. I suggest a rinse with something like Kilrock, a descaler. That should do the trick. Charles Pointon-taylor
