Asylum system on brink of collapse, MPS warn
Britain’s system for dispersing and housing asylum seekers is on the brink of collapse, the home affairs select committee warns today.
The MPS say vulnerable asylum seekers, including pregnant women, torture victims and children, are being housed in badly maintained, damp and vermin-infested properties.
They have rushed out their report because the Government is due to tender accommodation contracts worth £4billion over 10 years.
The MPS recommend that the Home Office should be stripped of responsibility for inspections with the job passed to local councils.
