It’s one of the most poignant stories of the First World War, and a tale that has passed firmly into the realms of myth. On Christmas Eve in 1914, a temporary truce was declared by Allied and German front-line troops, who took the impulsive decision to cease fire and sing Christmas songs across no-man’s-land. This moving opera, Silent Night, by composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell is based on that story, and it won a Pulitzer Prize in 2012. Here the work is performed by Opera North and conducted by Nicholas Kok.
